Social AnxietySocial Anxiety - Artist Statement

What normally strikes me when I paint marbles are the shadows and light they cast; the long or short spears of reflected colour. As a result, most of the marbles have breathing space around them. Some will bump against each other, or group themselves in companionable twos and threes, but mainly they are solitary islands of colour and reflection. “Social Anxiety” is a break in the pattern. In this painting they’re all piled on top, beside, beneath each other in a claustrophobic jumble, each struggling to find their place among all the others, while the intense colours contrast, but also heighten the feeling of claustrophobia. From a distance, they no longer read as singular marbles in a group, but a collection of stripes and patterns bleeding one into another, reflected and buried in the Many.
