Like a tasty cocktail, this painting is an exploration in balancing contrasting flavours: warm and cool, dark and light. The warm, orangey pink of the tangy grapefruit, which is also reflected on the paper label, contrasts with the cool, blue-green bottle of the gin; shots of brightness in the fruit emerging from the darker, mysterious background which glints with chrome, the whole reflected in the tray on which it is served.
